Closed Captioning for Final Cut Pro
using CPC's MacCaption software
FCPX and MacCaption
With FCP7, you can use print to tape to dump videos on
to videotapes
using cards like AJA Kona, BlackMagic Decklink, and Matrox MXO2.
FCPX does not have this option. But there is a
solution. See closed captioning with FCPX.

A complete HD closed captioning and subtitling solution.
No additional CC hardware required. No generation loss!!!
MacCaption enables many different kinds of closed captioning software workflows for Final Cut Pro:
Closed Caption HD Tape via HD-SDI
MacCaption (DTV Lite, DTV, and HD Enterprise) can create a HD closed captions track for Final Cut Pro 7. Simply author your closed captions (or convert a cap file from another captions source), and Edit to HD Tape with true CEA-708 and CEA-608 closed captions. Output via your AJA Kona or IO HD, Blackmagic Decklink, or Matrox MXO2 series video device. CPC's unique software encoding technology means no special encoding hardware is necessary.
Closed Caption SD Tape via SDI and Analog
MacCaption (NLE, DTV Lite, DTV, and HD Enterprise) can create a SD closed captions track for FCP7 using your AJA, Blackmagic, or Matrox hardware. You can also create a line 21 overlay video ("black movie") for any NLE including FCP6 and earlier (using MacCaption NLE or higher).
Closed Caption DV Tape via Firewire
MacCaption (DV and higher) can encode closed captions directly into DV QuickTime files. You can then print to DV (miniDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO) tape via Firewire using any version of FCP.
File-based Closed Captioning Workflows
MacCaption can embed closed captions directly into many kinds of video files for digital delivery:
- QuickTime:
- QuickTime DTV 608/708 HD Closed Captions (MacCaption DTV-Lite, DTV or higher)
- QuickTime 608 SD Closed Captions (MacCaption WebPlus or higher)
- Line 21 onto any QuickTime video (MacCaption NLE or higher)
- MPEG-2 Elementary, Program, and Transport Streams (MacCaption DTV or HD Enterprise)
- MXF Files for XDCAM, Omneon and SeaChange servers (MacCaption HD Enterprise)
- DVCPRO-HD QuickTime files for Omneon servers and more (MacCaption HD Enterprise)
- Common closed caption formatted files such as Cheetah .CAP, SCC, MCC, etc. (MacCaption WebPlus or higher)
Closed Captioning for Web and Mobile Devices
MacCaption (WebPlus and higher) can add closed captions to any kind of web video format: QuickTime (including for iPod/iPhone/iPad/etc.), iTunes, YouTube, Flash, Windows Media.
Closed Captioning & Subtitling for DVD and Blu-ray
MacCaption (WebPlus and higher) can add closed captions and subtitles to DVDs for most professional authoring programs, including DVD Studio Pro. It can also create HD subtitles for Blu-ray authoring programs.
Subtitles
MacCaption DTV and HD Enterprise can create alpha channel subtitle videos to overlay burned-in subtitles for any NLE system. See: Subtitling with CPC software
Extract, Edit, and Convert Closed Captions
MacCaption can extract closed captions from an already captioned video and re-export them to a huge variety of formats. It can automatically conform the closed captions to match an edit decision list, or manually edit the existing closed captions in an easy-to-use non-linear interface. And it even supports batch conversion and CLI scripting for automation workflows.
